Rioting is the smoke pointing you to a fire. Colin Kaepernick knelt peacefully and there was heavy backlash at his peaceful protest. Please pull back the curtain on the particulars of the rioting and look at what is being pointed to.
Black people are not safe. They live with the possibility that they could be wrongfully accused, incarcerated or killed. If you’re a black parent, you have to teach your children how to handle the cops and authority figures and even so that is no guarantee of one’s wellbeing or survival.
Recently, someone asked me if I was going to have kids and I realized part of my “no” answer is that I’m not emotionally equipped to worry about a black child in this society, especially a black boy that will one day grow into a black man.
The riots are asking you to listen if you don’t already know what’s happening. They are asking you to find out why black people feel they are being treated as less than human, why they live in fear, why they feel unfaired, and most of all, the riots are asking you to wake up and do something. To be upset that your brother in humanity is hurting to such a degree and to have you decide it is unacceptable and you will stand boldly as an ally in human equality that necessarily includes black people and take action.
Don’t let the smoke fool you, there is human pain at its root. That is where the smoke is calling you to, not to the broken glass, but to the root pain of a people.
